Juan has been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Malachy Friedman since 2015. He has competed in multiple tournaments with podium finishes in IBJJF and NAGA. But his tournament wins don’t begin to tell Juan’s BJJ story. Born in Washington State, Juan has lived in Charleston since he was 2 years-old. Always active, Juan played soccer throughout high school and college. Today, Juan runs a concrete company and is no stranger to hard work. He can swing a sledgehammer with the best of them, but even after days of breaking concrete, you’ll never hear Juan complain. In January of 2015, he walked into a MMA gym and was in awe of the gracefulness and beauty of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Juan began his BJJ journey a few days later, but honestly didn’t expect BJJ would have much of an impact on his life. In fact, it would change his life dramatically. Before Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Juan suffered social anxiety so debilitating that most days he couldn’t bring himself to make eye contact with strangers and was even shy around friends and family. Today, as a Purple belt, Juan credits Jiu-Jitsu with making him very sociable and relaxed, and believes he is proof of what an amazing personal transformation Jiu-Jitsu can provide! As a BJJ enthusiast and a parent of a young child, Juan is very excited to share his passion for Jiu-Jitsu and help kids become their very best selves.
