If your looking for a professional, knowledgeable, clean, focused place for you or your child to learn bjj then I couldn't recommend this place more. I have two children who learn here. The environment is that of any top level gym and the staff is knowledgeable and focused on you or your child learning not only a martial art but lessons they can carry everyday to make them stronger and better people

It can be pretty intimidating when you first walk in, but you are instantly greeted by friendly faces from both coaches and other students. I'm fairly new to BJJ and thought for sure in a big gym like Black Label Martial Arts I would fade into the background. That couldn't be further from the truth! Malachy takes the time to get to know all of his students and offers individualized instruction during classes. He's also kind of funny sometimes! Absolutely love this gym! Can't imagine training anywhere else!

I just started training here about two or three months ago. I travel full-time and have trained BJJ all over the world. There are a hand-full of places on the planet that make you feel like a member of the family from the moment you walk in. Black Label Martial Arts is one of them! The BJJ here is top-notch and they have training 6 days a week, multiple classes. They have a great group of folks there, especially the owners Malachy and Sarah! I wouldn't hesitate to refer anyone to train here! Oss!

My first experience was a very good one.. everyone was very nice and helpful to me. I have zero experience in this art form. A warm but disciplined environment and very professional. I am excited about continuing to train here.. I will be back bet on that!

BJJ Legend, Ricardo Liborio visits Black Label Martial Arts Charleston – Members are FREE!

Thank you to Master Ricardo Liborio, BJJ Legend and founder of Black Label Martial Arts, for visiting with our students here in Charleston.  Professor Malachy Friedman gave an early Christmas present to all his students. The free seminar was spent talking about the life values such as humility, perseverance, a hunger for knowledge and grit that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has given to Liborio and Malachy. The seminar spanned over 3 hours going over techniques ranging from the fundamental ” bow and arrow” choke to the advanced ” Sarge” sweep (a move closely related to the tornado guard developed by one of Carlson Gracie’s students).

The following day The Lab students spent an hour in the “Liboritory”. A class going over concepts and new ideas like once taught at the Carlson Academy and American Top Team Headquarters. This gave students a peak into what training under the legend Ricardo Liborio was like in a daily setting. The Lab, now a weekly class, instills the vision Liborio had to constantly research and innovate the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. One quote remains true in our martial arts journey is “Civilize the mind but make savage the body.”

Master Liborio always encouraging innovation and so was the first person Malachy went to when developing the Darce defense now in DVD format. Before the The Darce Killer DVD came out Friedman and Liborio spent about 3 hours in the morning and 4 hors in the afternoon going over every possible situation they encountered in the fight and Liborio gave my new counter system validation and even a new name. “The Swing” had been baptized and a other branches to the system created. This one move catapulted the Darce Killer.

It is always amazing to show your coach an innovation and have him thrilled about it. Since day one it’s always the same excitement. Look what I can do! He was instrumental in the creation of my DVD The Darce Killer

Master Liborio then worked one on one with our MMA competitors showing the system of ATT ground and pound  made famous on the world stage of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship).

One thing is for sure to quote Master Liborio” Many people can teach you how to fight…not many can teach you how to live being a fighter.” Our academy is lucky to have someone to look up to like him.
