Johnny Tama, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) World Champion, to teach at Black Label Martial Arts on
Friday, August 20, 2021
CHARLESTON, SC – Johnny Tama, native of Guayaquil, Ecuador, No-Gi World Champion and first
Hispanic to win an International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) Black Belt World Title will teach
a seminar at Black Label Martial Arts in West Ashley on the eve of the IBJJF Charleston International
Open. Tama is expected to compete in the tournament the following day.
Tama began training in BJJ at 16 years-old after taking a vicious beating in the street in 2009. Though
he started with the purpose of self-defense, he quickly began accumulating competition medals, and
received his black belt in only seven years from Juan Miguel Iturralde. The BJJ belt system is an
exacting standard and can take a serious practitioner ten years to achieve a prestigious black belt.
While Tama is a self-confident and fierce competitor on the tournament mats, he is also deeply spiritual,
believing his strength to overcome his many hardships and seize ultimate victory comes from hand of
God. He confidently posted on social media before winning the IBJJF No-Gi Worlds. “This weekend is
when I will become what I’ve dreamed so much for so long, watch me!”
Malachy Friedman, owner and head instructor at Black Label Martial Arts, said “We are thrilled to
present a Johnny Tama seminar. Tama is not only a high-level Gi and No-Gi competitor, but he is an
innovator. He is known for the Tama Lock, which is a leg-lock submission move.”
At the seminar, Tama is expected to cover modern guards and passing, including 50/50 and leglock
entries. The event seminar takes place at Black Label Martial Arts at 1850 Wallace School Rd in West
Ashley on Friday, August 20, 2021 at 6:00 pm. Pre-Registration is required as it’s expected that the
seminar will be a capacity crowd event.
